A New York Ranger has become the city's first professional team athlete to stand up publicly for gay marriage.

Rangers winger Sean Avery released a video as part of a campaign to get the state legislature to approve same-sex marriage.

Avery joins a small number of professional athletes to make such an open push for gay marriage.

The player has been viewed as an antagonist in the National Hockey League.

He's also been voted the league's "most hated" player and twice led the NHL in penalty minutes.

Avery has shown a softer side recently, working as an intern for Vogue.

Until now, the “New Yorkers For Marriage Equality” campaign has featured mostly politicians and entertainers.
