Gov. Cuomo said this is a day of complex emotions of jubilation and reflection.

While state lawmakers are celebrating the death of the mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks, their gaiety is guarded.

“I think it’s both a great victory on this chapter of terrorism, but we can’t let our guard down,” said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.“There are ‘me-toos’ out there, he created a whole network.”

And Cuomo hopes to strengthen the state’s networks. As news broke late Sunday night he directed all state agencies and public authorities to immediately coordinate public safety plans.

“We have since been working over night to ensure that all arms of state government are cooperating with each other and with our federal and local counterparts in evaluating security needs around the state,” said Elizabeth Glazer, the state deputy secretary of public safety.

Still some lawmakers say more needs to be done and are calling on the federal government to commit additional resources to New York City and state, a prime target for terrorists.

“We still have a very soft underbelly that’s not secure, 10 years after 9/11, whether it be radio operability, the JFK Air Train being unsecured, the George Washington Bridge, even the Port Authority bus terminal,” said State Sen. Greg Ball (R-Homeland Security Committee Chairman). “So there are very serious questions.”

The Cuomo administration says it will be examining places of critical infrastructure and New Yorkers should expect to see heightened law enforcement presence especially in and around New York City.

“We’ll be fighting this war everyday that I’m governor, we’ll be fighting this war against terrorism,” Cuomo said.
