You don't have to go to Washington to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's annual Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival will be in full swing this weekend.

Now in it's 30th year, there are more than 60 events planned, including dance performances, a puzzle plaza and a variety of Japanese pop bands.

Organizers say the festival strives to bring together traditional and contemporary Japanese arts and culture.

"In New York it's been a very rough winter, and every year it kind of feels that way...like we all just want to get outside and enjoy spring. And the cherries are really a great symbol of that," said Brooklyn Botanic Garden Director of Public Programs Anita Jacobs.

The festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday.

The garden will also take time to reflect on the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, holding a moment of silence each day.
