Thousands of women laced up their running shoes for the largest women's half-marathon in the country Sunday.
About 10,000 runners from 48 states and 18 countries took part in the eighth annual race sponsored by More and Fitness Magazines, which kicked off at Central Park.
This year's winner, Sheri Piers, finished with a time of one hour and 17 minutes. She was the only professional athlete competing in the race.
Four members of the NY1 family -- health reporter Kafi Drexel, public relations manager Nikia Redhead, researcher Jessica Prater and news assistant Jennifer Kim -- took part in the race.
"I think that this is something that anybody can do," said Drexel. "Not everybody loves to do it, and I have to admit there are a lot of days that I don't love it so much either, but it's really just one of the easiest, most accessible, least expensive ways of staying fit."
"It started with some of the [NY1] anchors that were running: Jeanine Ramirez, Dean Meminger, Kafi. They were running, they inspired me, and I was like, 'You know what? If they can do it, I can do it too,'" said Prater.
Some runners said they were taking part for their own health, while some had others in mind.
"There are women out here who are running it because they had breast cancer or for friends who had breast cancer or friends who had celiac disease, or people who want to reinvent themselves or change their lives," said More Magazine Editor-In-Chief Lesley Jane Seymour.
The race is a partnership with New York Road Runners.
