New Yorkers of all ages hit the slopes, with free snowboarding, snowshoeing, sledding and cross-country skiing for free.

The annual event is usually held in Manhattan, but this was the first year it was held in Brooklyn.

"We normally go to Central Park, but we're happy to see it here in Prospect Park, which is a bigger park, it seems, compared to the normal area that they usually use in Central Park," said a participant. "And we're having a good time."

Another change this year was the amount of snow the city needed to make.

"It's bare ground everywhere and we come in and we make snow. This year, we just put some icing on the cake," said Ted Blazer of the Olympic Regional Development Authority.

Acrobats and musical acts performed, and amateurs and pros held a snowboarding contest.

"It's pretty cool. You would have to go upstate to get this somewhere else," said one participant.

"We want to encourage people to come out in the wintertime. Winter is a great time to stay active, to stay fit," said First Deputy Parks Commissioner Liam Kavanagh. "There's lots to do in parks all over the city and this is a way to entice people out of their houses when maybe they're feeling a little bit of cabin fever after this long tough winter we've had. Come out and have some fun."

Free refreshments and food samples from local vendors were provided by the Pride of New York Winter Market.
