Parents, students and teachers weighed-in Monday night on the Department of Education's plan to put a charter school in the same building as two public schools in Harlem.

At a public hearing at Wadleigh Secondary School/Fredrick Douglas Academy II, parents and teachers said the building housing the schools is already overcrowded.

Now the DOE wants to move in the Harlem Success Academy as well.

Parents and teachers say the plan would hurt arts programs and services for special education students.

"How would this work for us if they split our rooms in half? We wouldn't be able to accommodate those kids -- wheelchair bound kids, kids with emotional problems. How would they fit into this? And are they looking at this when they say that we are going to throw a charter school in," said Wadleigh High School Faculty Member Denise Faust.

"By them allowing another school to come into the school would only make the class rooms overcrowded, so the education will not be adequate and they won't get the individual attention that they need," said Wadleigh High School Parent Sonia Rivera.

The DOE stands by its proposal saying, "We believe these three strong schools can come together to share space collaboratively and successfully, like hundreds of other schools across the City do every day."
