Case Against GOP Operative Temporarily Adjourned

A case involving a high-profile Republican operative accused of stealing more than a million dollars from Mayor Michael Bloomberg's re-election campaign was temporarily adjourned Monday.

The attorney for John Haggerty says the defense wanted the adjournment so the judge could take more time to reviewing grand jury minutes and other paperwork.

"The central issue here is whether or not the indictment should be dismissed. And at the core of that is the sufficiency of the grand jury minutes. So I think it's important for the judge to fully understand the case from the perspective of the grand jury minutes before we make our arguments," said Defense Attorney Raymond Castello.

Haggerty was indicted last June and pleaded not guilty.

The Manhattan District Attorney says Haggerty set up a sham poll-watching organization to provide ballot security during the mayor's bid for a third term.

Prosecutors say he used the funds to buy a house in Queens.

Haggerty's attorney says oral arguments for the case are set for February 8.
