After almost a century in Jamaica, Queens, the Hostess Company's Wonder Bread factory has closed.

Almost 200 employees have lost their jobs as a result.

The closing was announced last year, when the company decided upgrading and modernizing the 140-year-old facility would be too costly in a tough economy.

A total of 175 plant and delivery employees lost their jobs, 25 fewer than what Hostess announced in October.

"I'm the only income in my house, yes. So I don't know how I'm going to pay my own bills," said former Hostess employee Justina Cedano.

"The company is keeping 20 trailer drivers and I'm one of them. But it's very sad that I know that some of the workers they didn't have the same luck that we had," said former Hostess employee Rafael Ramos.

Many of the employees who lost their jobs attended a job fair Wednesday, organized by City Councilman Leroy Comrie. However, some were concerned that the companies that took part were offering just half of what they were making at Wonder.

"It's not the same. It's not the same benefits. We got very nice benefits over here," said one former Hostess employee.

Through a statement, the Hostess Company said, "We want to do what we can to ease their transition, have wholeheartedly supported Councilman Comrie’s job fair and will continue to work with City and State agencies to provide information about unemployment insurance benefits, access to job re-training and new employment opportunities.”

A nearby Hostess outlet store will remain open, but the products will be brought in from around the northeast.
