Frustrated Travelers Delayed At Local Airports

The snow was a major obstacle for people trying to travel to and from the city on Sunday.
Delays were accumulating almost as fast as the snow at airports serving the city.
More than 1,400 flights were cancelled at John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty Airports.
While some airlines rescheduled flights for the upcoming weekend, some travelers are finding themselves stranded at the airports.
Some travelers said they could not reach the airline before heading out, so they went to the airport anyway and hoped for the best.
"Just ringing, absolute ringing. You're calling and it directs you to another line, departures arrivals, you press one for whatever you want to find out about and it just keeps ringing out," said one traveler at JFK Airport.
"We're flying to Los Angeles on Virgin today. We're the last flight out and everything afterward is cancelled," said another traveler at JFK.
At JFK, a few travelers were fortunate to score a hotel room for the night, but many more were forced to sleep at terminals. The airport provided some cots and pillows, but some took to the floor, curled up in chairs and found other creative comfort spots.
Crews were working around the clock to clear runways but officials say snow drifts made it impossible to keep them open.
"We had a 25 inch snowstorm a couple of years ago but it wasn't so bad because it stayed in one place," said LaGuardia Airport General Manager Thomas Bosco. "This 13.1 inches is flying all around so it is very difficult. The visibility was the big impediment to our snow removing operations throughout the night."
Several airlines waived fees they normally charged for one-time changes in affected areas.
