At the Home Depot in Park Hill, Staten Island, people lined up before the doors opened at 8 a.m. Sunday, to rush in and load up on snow blowers, salt and shovels.

"I figured I'd get a head start and get up and get this salt because... last year I didn't get it this early and I missed out," said a customer.

One store manager said 400 shovels were snatched up within the first hour, leaving some residents wondering what to for snow removal.

"They ran out of shovels. I can't even get any more shovels. I got the last one I think," said one shopper.

"Everybody's disappointed. Everybody's now going to the next Home Depot and Lowe's in search of them. So we're ready for the storm," said another.

Staten Islanders said they were not taking any chances. Last winter, the borough was hit by two unexpected snowstorms and that left residents a bit wiser and better at planning ahead.

"Last time my shovels broke... and [I] used up all my salt, so I have to replenish everything," said a consumer.

"Everybody's just getting prepared for Staten Island. But it's not our first snowstorm, we just know the proper procedure to do. Get your shovels, get your food, get your water, hug your family," said another.

There are lots of side streets on Staten Island, and it often takes the Department of Sanitation a bit longer to plow them out. So residents said they were preparing for a big dig out and crossing their fingers that the snow would not be so bad.
