Donations are down at Citymeals-on-Wheels, and the group is looking to kind hearted New Yorkers to get through the holiday season.

The situation is putting some of the neediest New Yorkers at risk of going hungry. In the five boroughs, the organization's 30 meal centers deliver 16,000 meals daily.

Citymeals-on-Wheels says its donations have shrunk by five percent -- about $130,000 -- from last year, amounting to about 20,000 fewer meals.

Organizers say each meal costs $6.42, and provides both nourishment and some much needed company to those who cannot leave their homes.

"The best part about Citymeals is walking into a homebound New Yorker's home, and understanding the need how their nourishment comes from the food we deliver but also the visit we bring to the door,” said Beth Shapiro of Citymeals-On-Wheels. “They're lonely. Three-quarters of them live alone. They're women, they outlive their spouses, their family, their children. And just this warm visit is enough to break anyone's heart, and warm their hearts for this holiday season."

Sometimes the Citymeals-on-Wheels delivery person is the only person Mary Lee, a 90-year-old Manhattan resident, sees all day.

"Meals-on-Wheels is it," said Lee. "They make my life worth getting up for."

Elaine Swann, another senior and a former actress who receives the meals, depends on the food deliveries.

"I use the milk and all the things that come with it, you know," said Swann. "I can't think right anymore. That's what's wrong with me."

Citymeals says 100 percent of donations goes to food preparation and delivery. To find out more about how to help, go to citymeals.org or call 1-212-687-1234.
