Union officials say Kevin Czartoryski died yesterday. He was 46 years old.

Czartoryski was diagnosed three years ago with pulmonary fibrosis and developed lung cancer.

His death comes as the Senate is set to vote on the James Zadroga Compensation Act as early as Wednesday. The bill that would provide billions of dollars in medical treatment and lost wages for those who have become ill since working at the World Trade Center following the September 11th terrorist attacks.

The NYPD Detective's Union released the following statement:

"Detective Czartoryski's condition is a glaring indication that we truly need the U.S. Senate's support on the Zadroga Bill. This would provide for monitoring, evaluation and treatment for heroes like Kevin."

Most of Czartoryski's time at the World Trade Center site was spent helping transport remains to the morgue.

After September 11th, he worked in the NYPD’s public information office, where he was highly regarded among the press corps.
