The former Staten Island resident arrested on terrorism charges and lying to the FBI did not enter a plea in Brooklyn federal court today and is now held without bail.
Abdel Hameed Shehadeh, 21, seen above, said he did understand the charges against him.
The judge ordered that he be detained after prosecutors said that he is a flight risk.
Federal prosecutors say Shehadeh tried to fly to Pakistan in 2008 to join the Taliban or a similar group and attempted to recruit another man. Pakistani officials did not let him enter the country.
Officials also say Shehadeh then attempted to enlist in the U.S. Army at the Times Square recruiting center, in the hopes of being deployed in Iraq so he could desert and fight against American soldiers.
The criminal complaint says he hatched the plan while living on Staten Island.
Investigators allege Shehadeh also created and administered at least three web sites that "advocated violent jihad against the west."
Shehadeh, who was taken into custody in Hawaii last month, was brought to New York after he waived his extradition rights.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of eight years behind bars.
