A 13-year-old girl was struck and killed by a car on her way to school Monday.
Officials say Sara Parris was hit by a sports utility vehicle just before 8 a.m. as she crossed the intersection of Rockaway Parkway and Avenue J in front of Canarsie High School.
The driver then smashed into parked cars nearby.
The girl was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say the driver remained at the location and no criminal charges have been filed.
She was remembered by friends and family as a good student and talented artist who was planning on becoming a registered nurse.
"Jovial, energetic, always smiling. She didn't let no one bring her down. No matter what you said, she just kind of bounced back from it," said one mourner.
"Parents are not supposed to bury children, children bury parents, and I don't know where to begin. It's going to be extremely hard for our family," said Deidre Parris, the victim's aunt.
Police said the driver remained on the scene and was taken to the hospital to be treated for trauma.
No criminal charges were filed.
