The top candidates for governor are campaigning in the city today, with Election Day less than a week away.

Republican Carl Paladino attended a news conference with construction workers who have pledged not to build the proposed Islamic cultural center near the World Trade Center.

Earlier in the day, he campaigned on Staten Island.

Paladino met with Hispanic voters in Westchester on Tuesday. He told the group he supports a path to citizenship through military service, but not blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Paladino To Appear On "Inside City Hall"

The Republican gubernatorial candidate will be a guest on tonight's "Inside City Hall." The program airs at 7 and 10 p.m.

"If you're an illegal immigrant, it's disrespectful for us to allow you to stay here with all the people that worked so hard, to earn their citizenship, whether they are in the Spanish community, in the Italian community, regardless of what community,” said Paladino. “And don't listen to [Mayor Michael] Bloomberg saying we need all those workers.”

When asked if he would advise illegal immigrants to leave the state, Paladino responded, “Yes, as fast they can."

Democrat Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, attended a “get out the vote” event Wednesday with former President Bill Clinton in Brooklyn.

Cuomo was also in Westchester on Tuesday, where he endorsed Hudson Valley Congressman John Hall.

The campaign events come as a new poll shows Cuomo still in the lead.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, Cuomo is ahead of Paladino by 20 percentage points, 55 to 35 percent.

Looking at the party breakdown, 88 percent of Democrats and 19 percent of Republicans support Cuomo, while independents are nearly spilt, 44 to 41.

For the United States Senate race, Senator Charles Schumer leads Jay Townsend 64 to 32 percent. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is leading 57 to 34 percent over Congressman Joseph DioGuardi.

The poll was done last week and surveyed about 700 likely voters in the state. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percentage points.

As usual, NY1 will provide the most comprehensive election night coverage in New York.

On Tuesday night, the station will be on the air continuously with its political team starting at 8 p.m.

NY1 will be covering the statewide races, the battle for control of the State Senate, and the fight for control of Congress.
