Crowds flocked to city beaches and pools Monday for one last day of swimming.

After a summer that included some record-breaking heat, beaches and pools closed for the season.

Families took advantage of every second by splashing around at Highbridge Park in Washington Heights. And on Coney Island, more parents and kids spent the day soaking up the sun.

Pool and beach-goers say this weekend was a great time to relax before heading back to work and school.

"I'm gonna soak up the sun and I'm gonna dance and have a good time and then I'm gonna get ready to go back to work,” said one beach-goer.

“I'm very sad because I want to stay in the pool longer,” said a young swimmer.

Businesses on the Coney Island boardwalk said they benefitted from the season’s hot and dry weather.

Lola Star of the boutique of the same name called it an incredible summer...

"Weather has been beautiful. We've hardly had any rainy days,” said business owner Lola Star. “Business has been great because of the new amusement park. Luna Park brought tons of people back to Coney Island, just the whole energy out here has been different."

And management at Luna Park, which opened on the former Astroland site on Memorial Day weekend, didn't have exact numbers yet, but they were pleased with the turnout.

"We couldn't have asked for better weather and I think ultimately we are above expectations at this point,” said Luna Park sales and marketing manager Johanna Orozco-Zaki.

Orozco-Zaki says ownership plans more attractions for Coney Island in the spring. For Star, next year is not a certainty, but she is hopeful.

"I think things are going to be great for Coney Island,” said Star. “And I think things are going to grow and thrive and we'll have more amazing summers like this one."
