As one of the drivers involved in a fatal car crash on Staten Island was arraigned on DWI charges Sunday, NY1 has obtained exclusive surveillance video of the crash and its fiery aftermath.
In the video, the out-of-control speeding car can be seen jumping the curb and slamming into a gas pump, igniting a fire.
Soon after, another car pulls in front of the pump that's on fire. Law enforcement officials say the car that looks like it's on fire is not, and was Korey Swatz's 2003 Nissan.
Swatz, 33, was arrested on DWI charges. He was released on $2,000 bail following his arraignment.
Swatz is the brother-in-law of Philip Boney-Scrivano, 20, who was killed in the crash.
Police say Boney-Scrivano lost control of his car at around 2 a.m. Saturday in Tompkinsville. Boney-Scrivano was pronounced dead at the scene.
"I think they have to watch these kids and watch the way they drink and drive because the guy was going over 95 miles per hour so that was why the impact, the crush on the car was so devastating and that was why he didn't make it out alive,” said a gas station employee.
Police say Swatz and Boney-Scrivano were driving to a fast food restaurant and that speeding and drinking played a role in the crash.
Investigators said Monday that despite earlier reports, drag racing was not involved in the crash. But those who live in the area still say that speeding is a problem.
"There's a high degree of aggression among drivers,” said one local resident. “They want to get there, and everyone else can get out of the way."
“They are drag racing. They're racing over this way and they come this way,” said another. “They race each other."
"There's a lot of speeding going on,” agreed a third. “Where you going, I don’t know, but stop the speeding."
Police say Boney-Scrivano's passenger suffered cuts to the head and is expected to be okay.
