Dozens of one-wheelers converged on the city as a three-day unicycle celebration kicked off Friday.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz launched the 2010 Unicycle Festival by proclaiming Friday to be "Brooklyn Unicycle Day."

Long-distance unicyclists started the day with a 13-mile ride over the Brooklyn Bridge, through Prospect Park and ending at the Wonder Wheel at the Coney Island Boardwalk.

Cyclists say one-wheeled riding might be quirky, but it is no joke.

"You know, folks who maybe learned when they were a kid, had one sitting in their closet for the past 20 years, you know they're going to be pulling them out tomorrow. I think as the word and idea of, 'Hey I can do that' spreads, you're going to see a lot more of New York on unicycles," said organizer Keith Nelson.

Unicyclists will be giving lessons on Governors Island on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and playing specially crafted sports, like one-wheeler hockey and basketball.

The festival ends at Grant's Tomb on the Upper West Side on Sunday.
