More than 300 workers received pink slips Friday from the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation, as part of city hospital budget cutbacks announced in May.

Most of the laid-off workers were in trade jobs as electricians and carpenters.

HHC officials said the employees' official last day will be September 17.

One worker said the carpenters union may even get involved as a result of the mass layoffs.

In May, HHC announced 500 layoffs over the next year and another 500 cuts through attrition.

Over the next five years, HHC plans to reduced their workforce by some 3,700 jobs.

The cuts could have been worse, but the city came up with more than a billion dollars to support the public hospital system.
