Many passengers spent their day waiting at Penn Station, wondering when they would get home. Some people slept, while others sat around patiently.

"Really annoying, I just spent 12 hours on my feet at work and I just want to get home," said one stranded passenger.

One passenger looking to get to Stony Brook says she waited five hours for her train inside the station.

"I'm falling asleep and waking back up -- it's hectic, it's crazy," she said.

Prepared for the worst, police put barricades up on 33rd Street for crowd control. But by late afternoon, signs that said suspended service started showing track numbers. And while service was limited, it was a welcome sight for hundreds of stranded riders.

"I was in panic mode earlier, I was trying to arrange any mode of transportation to Jamaica, from Jamaica. Looks like I might get lucky tonight," said one LIRR passenger.

Although it took some people a bit longer to get where they were going, most took the delay in stride.

"Been doing this a long time and people panic in situations like this, but don't do it, and you'll get home," said one LIRR passenger.

"We're New Yorkers, this should be the worst thing, right?" said another.

A lot of regular commuters tell NY1 they think people found other ways to get home to avoid the LIRR. As a result, they say Monday's rush hour commute ended up being a reasonably light one.
