Police on Staten Island say a teenager has been taken into custody in connection with yet another bias attack in the borough.
Yashua Plair, 17, is being charged as an adult with both robbery and menacing as a hate crime.
Investigators with the New York City Police Department's Hate Crimes Task Force say the latest attack happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday near 190 Burgher Avenue in West Brighton.
They say a 15-year-old of Mexican descent was walking with two friends when he was singled out and attacked by a group of six or seven males.
Investigators say one person in the group displayed a knife.
They also say the group yelled anti-Mexican slurs and stole the teen's iPod.
The victim was not seriously injured.
One community activist who spoke with NY1 says outreach is the key to preventing these kinds of attacks.
"Not to speak of any one incident, when those kinds of incidents occur, you want to try to get to teens before those incidents occur, to be able to be sure that people are preaching a message of love and respect and living it in their lives and you have to be taught to hate and fear and it's our job to teach the opposite," said Terry Troia of Project Hospitality.
Meanwhile, news of the attack has put many neighborhood residents on edge.
"I think it's outrageous, because generally this is a quiet community and none of that usually happens here, it doesn't usually happen here," said one West Brighton resident.
"I just moved to this neighborhood and just to hear -- I come outside and you guys are here -- so it's just getting too close to home now you know and something really needs to be done about it," said another.
This is the eleventh incident on Staten Island to be labeled a bias attack since April.
Police have stepped up patrols in parts of the borough in response to the attacks.
