A teenager was arrested Thursday for allegedly robbing three people at gunpoint inside Central Park, but his accomplice remains at large.
Police arrested Jesse Wasserman, 18, of New Rochelle, N.Y., who allegedly committed the robberies with an accomplice between 11:50 p.m. Wednesday and 12:20 a.m. Thursday on the east side of the park between 81st and 84th Streets.
Authorities say the pair would ask their victims for directions. Once the victims were distracted, one suspect would pull out a gun while the other suspect would rob them.
The suspects allegedly stole a bicycle, cell phone, wallet and backpack from the victims.
Police quickly arrested Wasserman and charged him with robbery.
"The man who had been arrested and charged has been picked out by all three of the victims. No gun has been recovered as yet," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
Meanwhile, residents who frequent the section of park where the robberies took place say they're concerned.
"That's not safe. Whoever was there, they shouldn't have been here, but we shouldn't have to worry at 12 o'clock," said one Upper East Side resident.
"It's frightening and disappointing. You can't use a park like this to enjoy," said another.
The accomplice is still on the loose, and anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
