Two men were found guilty Monday in a plot to blow up fuel tanks at John F. Kennedy Airport.

A jury in Brooklyn federal court deliberated for five days before finding Russell Defreitas, 66, a former JFK cargo handler, and Abdul Kadir, 58, a former member of Parliament in Guyana, guilty of conspiracy. Defreitas was found guilty of all counts against him.

Kadir was acquitted on a charge of surveillance of mass transportation, but found guilty on five other counts.

Authorities said the plot was meant to outdo the September 11th terrorist attacks and avenge perceived United States oppression of Muslims around the world.

Defense attorneys had argued that their clients were simply big-mouths who were led astray by a key prosecution witness, who is a convicted drug dealer.

They say they plan to appeal the convictions.

"We're disappointed the jury found our client guilty. We've always maintained and he's always maintained he did not do this, he never joined this conspiracy," said Kadir's attorney Toni Messina.

"This was evidence of a man who was taking advantage of things that were being offered to him...and not someone who had the intent that the government claimed," said Defreitas' attorney Mildred Whalen.

Both men face up to life in prison when sentenced in December.
