A child was struck and killed this morning by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority vehicle while crossing an East Harlem street with his mother.

Seven-year-old Maxmilio Mendez of the Bronx and his 34-year-old mother were crossing Second Avenue between 124th and 125th Streets at around 9 a.m., when a tow truck from MTA Bridges and Tunnels hit them.

The truck was trying to enter a ramp for the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge.

Sources say the 34-year-old mother, who is seven months pregnant, was taken to Harlem hospital, where her condition is described as stable.

Witnesses say paramedics tried to revive the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say no charges will be brought against the driver, who remained on the scene.

Witnesses say the pair was heading to a local swimming pool.
