Crews in the Riverdale section of the Bronx spent most of Monday clearing downed trees and power lines after a weekend tornado left heavy damage.
According to the National Weather Service, the EF1 tornado touched down between 2:50 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday, packing winds of around 100 miles per hour.
The National Weather Service says the damage was observed along a .6-mile path from the Hebrew Home for the Aged on Palisades Avenue to the intersection of West 254th Street and Riverdale Avenue.
The storm brought down trees and knocked out power to thousands of customers. While the NWS says seven injuries were reported, there were no deaths.
"The rain was going around in a circle and all. Blasted through here; never saw so much rain coming down the hill here,” said one local resident. “And all the damage, next block up there a big tree down.”
“It was pretty rough, just getting home about, you know, 10 blocks, it was a trip,” said another.
"Couldn't see anything, it was just like a whole sheet of white water everywhere," said a third. "Definitely had to be a slight tornado or something."
As of late Monday night, Consolidated Edison was still working to restore power to roughly 50 customers.
This was the second tornado to touch down in the Bronx since 1950. The first was observed in 1974.
