Parks officials say a faulty sensor caused Wednesday's evacuation of the Statue of Liberty, and that there have been no resulting injuries or damage.

Earlier in the day, parks officials said there was a smoke condition after an elevator motor inside the pedestal overheated, but that proved to be false.

Nevertheless, everyone inside the statue had to be evacuated.

The Statue of Liberty was only fully reopened on July 4, 2009, in part due to concerns about how it could be evacuated in an emergency.

Congressman Anthony Weiner, who was instrumental in reopening the statue, said in a statement that he applauds the "quick response" of the New York City Fire Department and National Parks Service.

Nearly 85,000 visitors have got up to the statue's crown since it reopened, according to Weiner.
