Hundreds of former employees of North General Hospital are on the picket lines today, accusing a new community health center at the site of violating labor laws.

The workers say management for the Institute for Family Health is forcing them to switch labor unions in order to keep their jobs.

Some 900 members of 1199 SEIU were left unemployed when North General declared bankruptcy and was forced to close its doors.

The clinic opened in part of the hospital's building and so far the union says only seven of its members have been rehired.

"I think we're in the 'Twilight Zone,' because it's like we still can't believe this is actually happening," said one former worker. "So most of us, I think we're a little numb. We did not believe that they would actually do this to us."

"We're sad. We've put years into this hospital and we have one more day," said another. "It's just sad. We have nowhere to go."

The institute rebukes the union's claims saying, "employees at this location include former employees of North General Hospital who meet requirements of the new positions... and others recruited from the community. Many of our new hires are union members."

The institute also says it needs more experienced employees to use more sophisticated equipment.

The union says it plans to take the institute to court.
