With temperatures expected to reach into the high 90s this week, New Yorkers are doing what they can to beat the heat.

On Sunday, crowds flocked to the beaches and boardwalks at Coney Island for some sun and surf, while others got out early to secure shady spots for their barbecues and cookouts.

Still, others took refuge in local movie theaters, trying to keep cool.

"A cold rag, plenty of ice and a nice chair to sit down so you don't pass out, that's what you gotta do," said one New Yorker.

"Sit on the beach have a few beers and take a dip, that's the way to do it," said another.

"Too hot to be outside, the movie theater's the way to go for sure," said a third.

For those looking to brave the outdoors this holiday weekend, city officials are reminding residents to drink plenty of water, use sunblock and wear light-colored, loose fitting clothes.

Meanwhile, cooling centers are set to open around the five boroughs Monday, and will remain open until further notice.

New Yorkers who are at risk of heat illness and don't have access to air conditioning are urged to take advantage of the centers.

To find a cooling center near you, go online to nyc.gov/oem or call 311 starting at 9 a.m.
