Seventeen people have been indicted in connection with an international car theft ring based out of the Bronx.
Undercover video shows expensive cars being driven onto tractor trailers, which were then shipped to Senegal.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says hundreds of cars were stolen from the street, dealerships, and parking garages in the tri-state area. Some of the vehicles were then sent to Senegal in large shipping containers that falsely claimed to contain household goods.
Others were resold in the United States with fraudulent documentation.
The ring specialized in stealing Toyotas and high-end makes such as Mercedes and BMW.
"It was steal-to-order. They would get an order for a particular type of vehicle, and that would be the vehicle that they would steal, down to the accessory package,” charged Cuomo. “It was sophisticated in that they employed, as part of the ring, Toyota dealership employees, who could actually facilitate the making of the key for the vehicle."
Of the 17 indicted, 16 suspects were taken into custody.
The investigation, which lasted more than a year, involved the New York City Police Department Auto Crime Division, the State Police, and the attorney general's Organized Crime Task Force.
