Officials broke ground Tuesday on a new park in the Bronx that will eventually fill in the space where the old Yankee Stadium once stood.

The ceremony marked the beginning of construction of the 11-acre Heritage Field.

Once complete, it will feature three ball fields, brand new bleachers and a concession area.

The park will be built on the same grounds as the historic ball park -- a point not lost by officials on hand.

"Our young men and young women, think about this, they are going to be able to play in the same footprints with Yankee greats like Dave Winfield, Mattingly, Reggie Jackson," said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Junior.

"To be able to come out here in a year and watch these kids play -- you know that is our future and I don't think people really truly understand that. We're giving so many kids opportunities to take the right path," said New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of next year.
