Police in Long Beach, Long Island are ordering swimmers out of the water until life guard chairs are fully staffed.
It comes in the wake of the drowning death of 12-year-old Harlem student Nicole Suriel during a school trip on Tuesday.
Parents at Suriel's Columbia Secondary School are asking why students were allowed on a trip to a beach that was not open for swimming.
The sixth grader got caught in a riptide and drowned.
The Department of Education has not said whether parents signed permission slips stating the students would be swimming.
An independent investigator is looking into the incident.
