A 12-year-old Harlem girl drowned Tuesday while on a school trip to Long Island.

Officials in Long Beach, New York say Nicole Suriel was reported missing around noon.

Her body was later found just off shore.

Department of Education officials say Suriel was a sixth grader at the Columbia Secondary School and was at the beach with about two dozen other students.

The beach was not patrolled by lifeguards at the time.

"Kids were hysterical, screaming on the floor, crying, yelling their friend was gone," said one witness.

"There are holes there that she could've gotten caught in and the current would keep her in that hole," said one official.

DOE officials say a crisis team was sent to the girl's school after the incident.

The Office of the Special Commissioner of Investigation is looking into what happened.

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein released a statement saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Suriel Family and the entire school community at this sad and tragic time."
