State prosecutors are suing several companies in Brooklyn over claims they tried to scam Haitian immigrants in the wake of the deadly earthquake in Haiti.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says the companies illegally provided immigration advice to Haitians seeking "Temporary Protected Status" in the U.S. following the disaster.
The federal government started allowing the special 18-month status in response to the earthquake.
Among other accusations, the lawsuits say the companies charged people thousands of dollars to process applications that could be filed for free through a waiver or for a small fee.
In some cases, the immigrants weren't even eligible to stay here.
We first brought you complaints from victims in a story back in February.
Cuomo is currently the Democratic candidate for governor.
