Statistically, New York is still the safest big city in the country, according to the FBI's crime report for 2009.

The report, released Monday, shows overall crime decreased by 5.1 percent in the city last year.

Murders fell by almost 10 percent in NYC, compared to 7.2 percent nationwide.

New York City Police Department statistics show crime is down an additional 1.5 percent for the first five months of this year, when compared to 2009.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the report reflects the hard work of the NYPD. Mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged to continue to do everything possible to keep New York the safest big city in the country.
