A new sculpture atop the Metropolitan Museum of Art allows visitors to become part of the sky-high artwork. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

Great art should elevate you, but with a new installation on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art you have to do your part too by climbing up a set of elevated bamboo pathways 50 feet high above the ground.

Twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn have been working on the concept for years.

"It's more than a sculputre it's more like an organism to us. It's contstantly changing and growing," said artist Mike Starn.

It's called Big Bambu and the twins have been working with rock climbers to build it for months. It's a vast network of thousands of fresh-cut bamboo poles, tied together with miles of nylon rope. And even now that it's opened to the public it will continue to grow and change, creating a big wave.

"Right now the highest sort of knit together chaos is at about 30 feet. By mid June, maybe late June the highest area like that will be at 50 feet and by sometime late summer there'll be another 45 foot height on the west side and what's now the highest point will be the lowest point," said artist Doug Starn.

"It's really a slice of a seascape. The seascape to us is something that's always the same but always different, it's always changing. That's like all of us. We're all complete people but we're not finished we're still growing, we're still changing and that's what this artwork is really meant to make you think about," said artist Mike Starn.

Big Bambu is open until October 31. Visitors can climb the pathways on small guided tours. Tickets for tours are included with museum admission but you must wear rubber soled shoes and there are other restrictions.
