Embattled Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada and his son are speaking out against State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's new suit against father and son.

Espada and his son, Pedro G. Espada, who was included in the suit, defended themselves Thursday against allegations that they violated labor laws by setting up a sham job training program.

The suit accuses Espada's company, Espada Management, of paying janitors illegally low wages -- as low as $1.70 per hour -- by mislabeling them as trainees.

The older Espada says the new suit is another attempt by Cuomo to demonize him.

"And so I'm a big target for him, and this works for him, he's getting a lot of good polling done, picking on a Puerto Rican who works in an African-American, Latino community in the South Bronx that you could portray as a monster works for him," Espada Jr. said.

"The direct answer to your question is I have never dreamt of stealing a dollar from this program," said Espada's son, Pedro G. Espada.

This comes after FBI and IRS agents raided State Senator Pedro Espada Jr.'s health clinic last week.

They removed boxes of documents of potential evidence for Cuomo's investigation.

The attorney general accused Espada of siphoning off $14 million over five years from the Soundview Healthcare Network, Espada's non-profit healthcare network.
