Just weeks after NY1 first reported on an attack on an immigrant on Staten Island, the station has exclusively learned of two more attacks on immigrants in the same neighborhood.

In one incident on April 10th, police say a Mexican man was walking alone on Post Avenue and Clove Road when he was attacked with a baseball bat by a group of men, who knocked him unconscious.

This past Sunday, another Mexican man was hit with a bat on Castleton Avenue near Port Richmond Avenue.

Advocates for the immigrant community say more needs to be done to keep immigrants safe in their own neighborhoods.

"Obviously we would like to have more police presence at all times and I think that can help in the short term, but I think in the long term the community needs to get involved and be the eyes and ears of the police,” said Gonzalo Mercado of immigrant advocacy group El Centro de Hospitalidad.

“You ask the question, why this level of violence? Why are Mexicans being targeted? Is this anti-immigrant, is this bias against Mexicans? Is this a racial issue? It’s hard to know, but it’s instilled fear in the community,” said Terry Troia of Project Hospitality, a non-profit on Staten Island that provides services to hungry and homeless residents.

Two weeks ago, NY1 reported on the beating attack on Rodolfo Olmedo, which was caught on surveillance tape.
Four men are facing charges in that attack.

Police say they don't believe the incidents are connected, and are not classifying the most recent cases as hate crimes since no racial slurs were used.
