With a week left until a threatened strike deadline, thousands of building workers rallied Monday on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Nearly a million people living in buildings in the city could be without doormen, porters, and handymen if there is a strike.

Every borough would be affected except the Bronx.

"Unfortunately there's going to be an incredible disruption to the daily lives of the people of New York City. We want to avoid that but it unquestionably would be a disruption," said 32BJ Executive Vice President Kevin Doyle.

The Realty Advisory Board, which represents building owners, says it wants workers represented by 32BJ to start paying some of their health insurance premiums and accept changes to overtime rules.

They're also looking to cut down on the workers holiday, personal, and sick time.

Workers say the requests are simply unacceptable.

"The contract is no good. I rather them not take anything, and don't give us nothing, don't take nothing, so we can live. I got family. I'm a doorman and I work the night shift. It's hard for me. It's very hard. And hopefully, nothing happens," said 32BJ member Diego Gonzalez.

"With high unemployment, with really the real estate industry being devastated with regard to increases in operating costs and decreases in real income, that this is not the time for the traditional wage and benefit increases that we've seen in the past," said Realty Advisory Board President Howard Rothschild.

In 2006, the union also threatened to strike, but a deal was reached at the last minute.

The last strike in 1991 lasted nearly two weeks.
