Four buildings in Manhattan's Theater District were evacuated Tuesday after a manhole fire caused smoke and flames to shoot into the air.

New York City Fire Department officials say it began shortly after 4 p.m. and quickly rose to a three-alarm call.

Broadway was closed between 50th and 54th Streets as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

The Hotel Novotel and three other buildings were evacuated because of high levels of carbon monoxide.

It's believed several underground cables burst into flames, causing a series of explosions.

Con Edison crews are still investigating.

The fire even forced the cancelation of the night's performance of "Jersey Boys."

A spokesperson for the August Wilson theater says tickets can be exchanged at the point of purchase.
