Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined up with local straphangers Tuesday to rally against a newly revised list of bus and subway cuts that will be voted on by the MTA this morning.

Speaking out against the proposed cuts to the B51 and other bus routes, Markowitz spoke about the impact service reductions will have on riders, particularly those who are elderly or have disabilities.

"The majority of Brooklynites can't afford to hail a cab to go across Manhattan, they can't afford it. So this is the only alternative they have," Markowitz said. "I know the MTA would rather not cut anything. But there has to be some balance here and we're hoping that the state Legislature and the federal government will understand that we have to preserve out services."

In addition to state and federal assistance, Markowitz had several suggestions for plugging the MTA's nearly $800 million budget gap. Among his suggestions -- an increase in the gasoline tax, raising the fees on vehicle registration and a "Mega Millions" lottery dedicated to mass transit.

The agency is set to vote on proposed cuts at a full board meeting Wednesday morning.

NY1 will carry the vote live beginning at 9:30 a.m.
