After years of delays, protests and lawsuits, a groundbreaking ceremony will finally be held Thursday at the site of the New Jersey Nets' new arena in Brooklyn.
Governor David Paterson, Mayor MIchael Bloomberg, and rapper Jay-Z -- a part-owner of the Nets -- will be among those on hand for the ceremony.
While work has been ongoing at the Atlantic Yards site since last fall, the groundbreaking marks the next phase in the construction of the 18,000 seat Barclays Center.
Three residential buildings are also going up at the site, with construction on the first starting later this year.
The Nets are scheduled to begin playing there at the start of the 2012-2013 season.
They will play the next two years at the Prudential Center in Newark.
