Acting New York State Police Superintendent Pedro Perez announced his retirement Tuesday, just one week after replacing a predecessor who also retired in the midst of a law enforcement scandal.
In a letter addressed to Governor David Paterson, Perez, a 28-year veteran, said his decision to enter retirement this Friday was not influenced by the state attorney general's current investigation into a domestic abuse case involving one of Paterson's top aides.
"My decisions over time, combined with the indication that you are seeking a new superintendent and the labor unions’ perception of my ability to lead the agency, have led me to the conclusion that continuing in my position as Acting Superintendent may be an obstacle to progress of the New York State Police, an agency I love," Perez wrote to Paterson.
Published reports say Paterson and officials from his security team were directly involved in trying to get a woman to drop assault charges against aide David Johnson. The accuser then failed to show up for a subsequent hearing, leading to the case's dismissal.
Perez's predecessor, former Superintendent Harry Corbitt, left his office on Wednesday amid accusations that he was involved with the scandal.
