A nearly 30-year veteran of Capitol Hill was tapped Thursday for the leadership post relinquished by embattled New York Congressman Charles Rangel.

Michigan Congressman Sander Levin, who's served since 1983, will be acting chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi informed Democratic House members Thursday morning.

House rules stipulated for California Congressman Pete Stark to be interim chairman. But he has come under fire for comments he's made during his 30 years in Congress, and was accused of being belligerent with investigators during an ethics probe.

Rangel stepped down Wednesday as chairman in the wake of ongoing ethics investigations.

In an exclusive interview with NY1, Rangel said he stepped aside because he did not want to hamper re-election efforts for fellow Democrats, or become a distraction for house speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"It's not fair to her and it's not fair to the many freshmen and those who have close districts that instead of getting their message out, they are asking about me,” Rangel said.

Rangel insists his move is a temporary one, but Republicans disagree, arguing it would require a full vote of the House to reinstate him.

The Ethics Committee admonished the Harlem Democrat last week for violating House rules by accepting two corporate-sponsored trips to the Caribbean. The panel is still investigating accusations about Rangel's fundraising, his failure to pay taxes on rental income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic and his use of rent stabilized apartments in Manhattan.
