A 27-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a fire that killed five Guatemalan immigrants in Brooklyn over the weekend.

Daniel Ignacio, above center, was arrested and arraigned Tuesday on five counts of second-degree murder and one count of arson.

He is being held without bail.

Police sources say Ignacio told investigators that he was drunk when he used paint thinners to set a roll of toilet paper on fire inside a baby carriage in the hallway of the three-story Bensonhurst building where he lived.

Ignacio reportedly claims demons made him do it.

He said he then went to sleep inside his second-floor apartment as the flames erupted near the front door.

The fire killed four men and a woman, all Guatemalan immigrants.

Law enforcement officials say Ignacio is in this country illegally and had been deported in 2003 after being convicted of burglary.

Luisa Ordoñez de Chan, right, is the only victim identified so far. She died after trying to throw her two young children to safety.

The families of the other victims have not been notified.

"Some of them feel anger," said Pastor Eric Salgado, a spokesman for Chan's family. "Some of them are crying and cannot believe that it was something like that."

Investigators say there may have been as many as 20 people living in two apartments. There were no smoke detectors.

A vigil is planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the building.

Police sources say Ignacio was interviewed by investigators after the fire and admitted to setting it.

Ignacio is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
