NY1 In Haiti: Port Rebuilding Necessary For Recovery Efforts

The United States Coast Guard is being joined by Dutch sailors to assess the damage to the port in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

With a crumbling pier, it is nearly impossible for goods to be removed from the ships, even if they can dock. Many cranes have slid partially into the water.

Restoring a port is integral to bringing aid to the earthquake-ravaged country. It’s been more than a week since a magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook Haiti, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands and leaving millions homeless.

More people are out on the streets of the city today, trying to return to normal life.

Yesterday, NY1’s crew traveled to the General Hospital, where it witnessed so many patients in need of help. The doctors there, some of whom are from New York, say they are doing the best they can with little supplies, including a dearth of water.
