The Manhattan district attorney is looking into allegations the city's former police commissioner drove off after knowingly hitting a pregnant woman with his car.
Howard Safir hit a woman while backing up his car on the Upper East Side on Friday.
Current Commissioner Ray Kelly said he does not consider the incident a criminal matter, since detectives determined Safir did not realize he had hit anyone.
"They made a determination there was no criminality in the manner. The district attorney is apparently taking another look at it. That's clearly in his prerogative," said Kelly.
The victim, who was not seriously hurt, says she and a passenger in Safir's sports utility vehicle told him he had hit her.
Safir, who served as police commissioner from 1996 to 2000, has yet to comment on the incident.
