Former Nets star Jayson Williams was arraigned on drunk-driving charges Thursday, after crashing his sports utility vehicle into a tree earlier this week.
Williams was arraigned shortly after 1 p.m. via video link from Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital, where he's being treated for a chipped bone in his neck and other injuries sustained in the crash.
He has been charged with one count of driving while impaired and one count of driving while intoxicated. Bail was set at $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash and he will have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
He faces a year in prison if convicted of each charge.
Police say Williams crashed his car on Avenue C, near exit 7 of the FDR Drive around 3:15 Tuesday morning.
According to the criminal complaint, a witness saw Williams drive across four lanes of oncoming traffic before crashing into the tree on the sidewalk.
Investigators believe Williams had been drinking, but the former basketball player refused a breathalyzer test.
Williams was in the passenger seat when officers arrived and told officers the driver fled the scene. But witnesses say they saw Williams behind the wheel, and surveillance video did not show anyone leaving the vehicle.
The embattled former All-Star is scheduled to be retried this month on reckless manslaughter charges in connection with the 2002 shooting death of a limo driver at his New Jersey mansion.
He was convicted of covering up the shooting, but was acquitted of the more serious aggravated manslaughter charge.
