The U.S. Marine Corps is doing its part to help needy kids in New York City receive presents this holiday season.

Toys for Tots is once again collecting gifts in New York that will be redistributed to city children through community groups.

Despite the rough economy, the program has already collected more than the 148,000 toys gathered and distributed last year.

A seven-ton military truck parked in Times Square between 43rd and 44th Streets will collect toys through Christmas Eve.

"We are trying to provide a shiny new toy and a gift of hope, a shiny new toy every year to a child who wouldn't have had it otherwise," said Staff Sergeant Ivan Lebron. "Just look for the big green truck. We'll have Marines here to greet you with smiles and open arms. That's what we are here for, we are here to collect toys."

"There's a lot of people in this city that are still willing to give, a lot of people have reached down deep," said Staff Sergeant Henry Kelcinski. "Instead of buying that one cup of coffee, they go to Toys R Us and buy a toy for a less fortunate child here in New York."

Originated by a major in the Marines back in 1947, Toys for Tots became mandatory for every reserve station the following year.

Toys will still be collected and distributed after the holidays.
