The New York Police Department will have to turn over data regarding the races of people targeted in officer-involved shootings from 1997 through 2006.

A Manhattan Supreme Court judge ruled that the NYPD is not justified in withholding the information under the state's freedom of information law.

The ruling comes in response to a lawsuit by the New York Civil Liberties Union after the Sean Bell shooting.

The NYPD had argued the Freedom of Information Law request was limited to people actually struck, wounded or killed by an officer.

An attorney with the city Law Department says the decision is wrong and the city is reviewing its legal options.
