It's been a year since swindler Bernard Madoff was arrested for running a Ponzi scheme that cost investors tens of billions of dollars.
Known at the time as a reputable former Nasdaq chairman and securities firm executive, people and charities entrusted Madoff with billions in investments. Some lost their life savings in the scandal.
The financier later pleaded guilty and was sentenced in June to 150 years in prison.
The investigation has led to more aggressive enforcement of white-collar crime and tougher penalties for violations.
